What car key programming actually means

Since the late 1990s almost every car sold in the UK has an immobiliser. Inside your key there is a transponder chip that answers a challenge from the car every time you try to start it. If the answer is wrong, the engine will not run, even if the metal blade turns the barrel perfectly.

Programming is the process of pairing that chip, and the remote circuit for central locking, to your vehicle's security module. I plug into the diagnostic port, authenticate with the vehicle and write the new key into its memory.

Because I am SERMI registered, I can access manufacturer protected security data legitimately, which covers newer vehicles that used to be dealer only work.

    Keys I program

    Transponder keys

Standard blade keys with a chip in the head. Cut and coded to your immobiliser so the engine will start.

    Remote fobs and flip keys

Central locking, boot release and alarm functions programmed alongside the immobiliser chip.

    Proximity smart keys

Keyless entry and push button start systems coded to the vehicle, including replacements when a smart key is lost.

    Spare and additional keys

A second key programmed while your existing one still works, which is always the cheaper route.

    All keys lost coding

A brand new key generated and programmed from scratch when nothing is left to copy from.

    Van and commercial keys

Transit, Transporter, Vivaro, Sprinter and the rest, programmed on site so the working day is not lost.

    How the job works

    • You call or message me with your registration, make and model.
    • I confirm the key type you need and give you a firm price before I set off.
    • I come to your vehicle, check proof of ownership and cut the key if one is needed.
    • I connect to the vehicle, program the key and test locking, unlocking and starting.
    • You keep your old keys working unless you ask me to delete them.

If a key has been stolen, I can delete it from the vehicle's memory so it will no longer start the car. Just say so when you call.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Every modern car key holds a transponder chip or a remote circuit that has to be paired with your vehicle's immobiliser before the car will start. Cutting the metal blade is only half the job. Programming is the part that tells your car to accept the key.

Yes. I work from a fully equipped mobile van, so I program keys on your driveway, at work or at the roadside anywhere in Durham and the North East. There is no need to move the car.

Most jobs take between 20 minutes and an hour once I am with you. Some vehicles have a security delay built in by the manufacturer, and I will tell you about that on the phone before I set off.

Sometimes, but I need to see it first. Cheap online keys are often the wrong frequency or a poor quality clone that will not hold the programming. Send me a photo and your registration and I will tell you honestly whether it is worth using.

Yes. Proximity smart keys, keyless entry fobs and push button start systems are all covered. Being SERMI registered means I can access manufacturer security data the same way a main dealer does.

Your registration, the make and model, and proof that the vehicle is yours. That is a V5C or insurance in your name plus photo ID. I check ownership on every job.
