Obtaining a new car key is not the simple process it used to be. The option of a quick trip to a local shop to have a key cut from a standard blank has long gone.

That’s because since 1995 all cars require an immobiliser system to be installed to help prevent theft. Now, an engine will only start if it receives the same code from a transponder that is built into the corresponding car key. And since keys allow us to remotely lock and unlock our vehicles now too this adds to the cost of modern car keys.

But there’s no need to spend a fortune on a new car key if you choose the right source. A dealership of your car’s manufacturer may seem like the obvious option but it is also the most expensive one. You will also need to travel to their location, possibly more than once, since they will need to order your key in first, you can’t just ring and ask.

And if you’ve lost your only key, there’s the difficulty of somehow getting your car to the dealership in the first place, they certainly don’t come to you.
